The Heartbroken Maiden Fakes Her Death, and the Emperor Goes on a Killing Spree

To help Xiao Yunqi ascend the throne and rule the realm alongside him, Yun Nianzhi cleared every obstacle in his path, risking her life for him time and again. Even after he married a princess consort, she neither complained nor argued, continuing to work herself to the bone for him. In the end, she even took the blame for regicide and accepted the charge of a crime deserving death, all willingly, waiting only for him to fulfill his promise to “make her empress.”

At last, he ascended the throne. She thought her hardships were finally over and that she would earn his favor and become empress.

On the day of the coronation ceremony, she waited for a long time in her finery, but he never came. Then she saw him take another woman by the hand and announce, “Today, I name her empress.”

The woman taunted her smugly. “Did you really think he’d make you empress? Stop dreaming. My family can secure his throne, and you’re no longer of any use to him. Soon he’ll kill you to stabilize the court.”

And that was exactly what happened. Xiao Yunqi used her as an example to frighten the others.

Only then did she finally understand: she had been nothing but a stepping stone on his path to the throne. Once he had no further use for her, he discarded her without a second thought. So she staged her own death and vanished forever.

Three years later, they met again. Seeing her with a new face, her arm around a frail man and her belly rounded with pregnancy, Xiao Yunqi’s eyes turned bloodshot. He demanded, “Yun Nianzhi, how dare you marry someone else and get pregnant?”

She smiled faintly. “Your Majesty, I’m not Yun Nianzhi.”
