A Cry Amid the Waves of Wheat

Waves of Wheat: The Story of a Wheat Harvester in Xianyang, 1983 tells of Wang Mantun, a young man from the countryside, as he struggles and grows amid the changes of the times. Faced with his family’s barren saline-alkali land and his lover’s demand for a dowry of the "three transfers and one sound," he wavers between staying on the land and leaving to earn a living. His failed attempt to find work in the city alongside the wheat harvester Ma Laowu shows him the hardships and dignity of laborers at the bottom of society. After returning home badly injured, he discovers that his taciturn father has quietly reclaimed the alkaline soil and begun trying to grow apple trees.

Mantun comes to his senses and resolves to put down roots in the land. He learns agricultural techniques, improves the orchard, and protects his younger sister’s dream of getting an education. Through the contrasting symbols of "sickles and trains" and "digital watches and dictionaries," the novel recreates the clashes and convergence between city and countryside at the start of the Reform and Opening-Up period. In the end, on the land his forebears steadfastly held on to, Mantun finds new hope in using modern technology to forge a future, showing that the loess soil can preserve tradition and nurture new life. This is a Chinese story about roots, dignity, and the search for meaning.
