[Bad ending + reunited after years apart + first person + unrequited love + one-on-one romance]
If the person you loved as a teenager pushed you away twice for the sake of his mission, could you ever let it go?
_
When I was fourteen, my family fell apart completely.
My father cheated, and my mother died after a long illness. I went alone to live with my grandmother outside Yuncheng.
Next door lived Zhou Yu, a boy six years older than me. He was gentle and dependable, and always there for me through my most miserable and shameful moments. I secretly fell for him.
_
After four years together, day in and day out, I couldn’t tell whether the storm of feelings inside me was dependence or love. On my eighteenth birthday, I worked up the courage to confess, only to receive his restrained rejection.
He pushed me away cruelly and left on his own.
_
Eight years later, I became a field reporter and was sent out of town for an interview. There, I met him again, weathered by the years.
Only then did I learn the truth: he had gone undercover in the fight against drugs, lost a dear friend, and was tormented by guilt and self-reproach he couldn’t put behind him.
We laid our burdens to rest and chose each other.
Then an urgent call came in about a mission. His brow furrowed, and after weighing his options, he chose once more to head into the darkness.
From then on, we were separated by a sea of people, never to meet again for the rest of our lives.
_
Our first meeting was a fleeting glimpse; by the next, he had etched himself into my heart.

“May our land know peace, may everyone live in safety, and may every beautiful thing arrive right on time.”
Highly recommend this fatalistic book! The heroine's family is full of secret love, and the young male protagonist restrains himself from etiquette throughout the whole process and has an unrequited love in the early stage. In the early stage, the heroine's heart only moved in one direction, while the male protagonist abided by the rules and did not cross the line. The contrast between the two-way meeting when they were adults was so jarring. There are no bloody rivalries or misunderstandings, the male and female protagonists have a clean relationship 1v1, and the male protagonist has upright views and no bad guidance. Slow-burning first-person narrative, six-year age difference, OE ending that is difficult to reconcile, huge stamina, Baozi who eats gentle, regretful and sadistic stories with his eyes closed!
