Synopsis

In the turbulent years of the Republic of China, Chen Ran is an ordinary young man working at a Hong Kong dock. After his master is tortured and killed by Japanese invaders and their collaborators, and his junior schoolmate is abducted, Chen teeters on the brink of death when he unexpectedly awakens the “Heroic Spirit Codex,” an ability that lets him absorb the spirits of fallen heroes and inherit their lifelong skills. His quest for revenge quickly entangles him in a shocking conspiracy spanning Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. At its heart are the Japanese army’s mysterious sunken ship, the Rong Maru, and the “Black Sun Project,” a scheme to create superhuman weapons. In a world of glittering indulgence and bloody warfare, he joins forces with Su Wanqing, a brilliant red operative whose identity is shrouded in mystery. Suspicion and testing give way to a partnership forged in life and death.

Just as Chen slays his enemy and thinks he is close to the truth, the cruelest twist awaits him: the junior schoolmate he has searched for so desperately has been transformed into a soulless ultimate weapon, and now she swings her blade at him. This is a bloody struggle between personal revenge and the survival of the nation, as well as a tragic chronicle of the unsung heroes of a turbulent age. Many of its characters and events are adapted from true stories of the War of Resistance in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. Remember history and honor the fallen. This story is dedicated to the countless compatriots who fought to resist the Japanese invaders not so long ago!

In his darkest moments, Chen Ran repeatedly feels the calling of his mission as a “Guardian of Huaxia.” He no longer fights only for revenge, but also for the compatriots suffering under the Japanese army’s iron heel and for a land ravaged by war. He stops clinging to “erasure” and “destruction,” and turns his strength toward “protection” and “hope.”

As the war expands, Chen Ran uncovers the ultimate secret of the “Black Sun Project” and wins the final clash of destiny against Kurozawa Mitsumasa and other evil forces atop Mount Tai.

In the end, Chen Ran and Su Wanqing find love in Hong Kong and spend the rest of their lives together.
