The work tells the heroic deeds of the Scandinavian hero Beowulf. It is the oldest and longest relatively complete literary work of the Anglo-Saxon period in Britain discovered so far. It is also the earliest dialect epic in Europe. It was completed around the eighth century AD. It is called the three heroic epics of European literature together with the French "Song of Roland" and the German "Niebelungenlied".
