In 1993, Zhang Shidan was an exemplary student at Yanshui Middle School. To save his seriously ill father, he had no choice but to strike a deal with his uncle, Zhang Yuqing, the county’s director of commerce. His cousin, Zhang Shijie, took his place in the college entrance examinations, leaving Zhang Shidan without a place at university. To help support his family, Zhang Shidan weighed his options and went to Peking University to work as a security guard. But he never gave up on working toward his goals. While on the job, he sat the independent entrance exams for a computer science associate degree at Peking University, earning his diploma in just a year and a half. He then successfully entered Tsinghua University’s computer science graduate program. After graduating, he stayed on to teach. Through his own hard work, he made major contributions to computer science, rose to become a professor at Tsinghua, and became a renowned computer expert in China. At thirty, he founded a company and built his own IT empire.
