At twelve, Fu Dou took up a gun. At sixteen, during a lull in the fighting, he hid the wealthy landowner’s child bride in a feed sack and led her toward an unknown future. This was how his story with his first wife, Wang Xiuling, began, and the prelude to his legendary life.
He had a soft heart and always chose to become entangled at life’s crossroads. He married eight times, and five of those marriages were tied to the same woman: the famous widow Ye Zhen. From their first meeting until their hair turned white, they were bound together through breakups and reconciliations, finding comfort in each other amid the tides of the times and weaving a bond they could never untangle.
This is Fu Dou’s story, a tale of war and choices, and of a man whose soft heart carried him through a lifetime bound by love and devotion.
