A god commands all things and roams the universe. “Yu” encompasses heaven and earth in all directions, while “zhou” spans all time, past and present. The universe as people define it today is much narrower than this. There is only one god. After billions of years in darkness, loneliness took hold, so the god created two divine envoys in its own image: Pangu and Nuwa. One was given the power to create heaven and earth, while the other was tasked with bringing forth all living things. After countless eons, one of the envoys made a wager with the god. The prize was mastery over the universe: the ability to traverse time and space. The game board was a tiny planet called Earth.
