Understand China's Political Gains and Losses Through the Dynasties in One Book

Closing The Political Gains and Losses of Successive Chinese Dynasties feels like completing a political journey spanning a thousand years. With the clear-eyed yet compassionate perspective of a historian, Mr. Qian Mu dismantles misconceptions surrounding the label “feudal autocracy,” revealing the checks and balances built into the Han dynasty chancellor’s office and the ingenious design of the Tang dynasty’s Three Departments and Six Ministries. He also confronts the stagnation of the Ming and Qing institutions. These long-buried secrets of governance reflect not only the ancient pursuit of good government, but also resonate today, from civil-service selection and grassroots governance to checks on power and cultural inheritance. History has never truly passed. This work is more than a review of the past: it is a mirror reflecting the timeless questions of institutional rise and decline, and the struggle of human nature.
