Demon hunter Si Yao, raised in the mountains, arrives in the imperial capital's Demon Suppression Bureau carrying a letter of introduction from her master. On her very first day, she runs into the unruly young Wei Zhuo.
“I'm young and talented. What's wrong with being a little arrogant?”
Faced with his swagger, Si Yao thinks to herself: “I'm young and talented too, but I don't act like that.”
The two unexpectedly become friends on a rooftop. But on her first day, Wei Zhuo gets Si Yao into trouble, earning her a half-month punishment sweeping the corridors.
Later, Si Yao becomes a night watchwoman at the Demon Suppression Bureau and is partnered with Lu Jin, who seems sweet and well-behaved.
She offers her a pastry and asks, “Want one, friend?” Lu Jin replies softly, “Thank you.”
But the longer they spend together, the more Si Yao realizes that this seemingly good girl is a master of hiding her true nature.
Before long, Si Yao, Wei Zhuo, and Lu Jin form a demon-hunting squad and leave the city to gain experience.
Along the way, Si Yao repeatedly crosses paths with the frail young Marquis Xiao Yinghuai.
“Hey, Marquis Xiao, what a coincidence. We've met again.”
She greets him with a smile, and Xiao Yinghuai smiles back. “We really are fated to meet.”
