Sons of Commoners

Born a concubine’s son in the Chen family, Chen Zhengqing’s name seems to define his fate: poor, insignificant, and overlooked. He and his mother huddle in a corner of the family estate, clinging to twenty mu of barren, drought-stricken land so poor even the tenant farmers shake their heads. Year after year, they struggle to make ends meet. His fortunes begin to turn when he happens upon a tattered farming manual. While the legitimate sons recite poetry and study the classics at the clan school, he silently bends over the fields, working with manure and soil. Following the manual’s scattered instructions, he doggedly experiments with composting, a method no one believes in. At last, a hint of green struggles to sprout in the hardened earth. Yet this small success in farming wins him no favor. Instead, it sets off alarm bells in the sensitive halls of the family estate. The steward Qian Changshui watches him greedily, his stepmother Madam Zhou suppresses him coldly, and his cousins mock him with contempt. Improving the soil is not all he is doing: he is challenging the established order. With others working against him, he has no choice but to tread more carefully. In public, he retreats and gives ground; in secret, he moves his tofu workshop underground, building his strength more discreetly. He brings together poor, overlooked branches of the family and forges the most basic of alliances through shared interests. Drawing on both the farming manual and his own experiments, he keeps learning: raising seedlings, fighting pests, breeding livestock… bit by bit, he pushes the boundaries of what is possible. This is a path to overturning his fate, one that begins in the soil. Chen Zhengqing must fight not only against the seasons and for the land’s bounty, but also against other people for the slightest chance to survive. In a family governed by rigid hierarchy, can a concubine’s son use his skills and cunning to break the shackles of his birth and win a place to stand for himself and those who follow him?
