Repeating Senior Year: One Turn, and My Whole Youth Was Behind Me

[Theme] Forge medals in the ruins of purgatory, and kindle a glimmer of hope in the narrow gaps of fate. A brutal coming-of-age epic about a group of repeat students branded as “failures.” Under the pressure-cooker of the college entrance exams, they tear off their humiliating labels and rewrite their fates with sweat and blood, ultimately achieving a spiritual rebirth by supporting one another. [Realistic, hard-hitting youth fiction] Expose the cruel truth of repeating a year to retake the college entrance exams: the humiliating stain of a 402 score, bullying by first-time test takers, unfairly distributed resources, and cruel comparisons within families. With unflinching realism, portray the struggles of the “failures’ alliance.” No uplifting fantasy here: the story confronts the mental collapse and class shackles faced by repeat students. [A complex ensemble’s shared rise] The sharp-tongued genius Huang Yusong and the stubborn girl Cheng Xiaozhu forge a relationship of “mutual exploitation.” Their constant bickering gradually gives way to hidden concern. The “failures’ alliance” discovers its unity: conflict between first-time test takers and repeat students, rooftop barbecue where they reveal their scars, and the 401 class lining up in battle gear to fight back. Individual struggles become a collective battle for dignity. [A refreshingly unconventional approach to growth] Success isn’t measured by scores alone: Cheng Xiaozhu shatters her label with a score of 541, Huang Yusong defies his father with a score of 597, Wan Kexin accepts that her dream of getting into the Central Academy of Fine Arts is over, and Wu Junhao makes peace with attending a vocational college. True victory means forging the clarity to “fight for yourself.” [A romance free of saccharine sweetness] Cheng Xiaozhu and Huang Yusong’s relationship begins with mutual harm and ends in silent support. Their awkward tenderness upends traditional coming-of-age storytelling.
