It tells the legendary story of Zhong Kui, who was favored by his friend Du Ping during his lifetime and was named the King of Ghosts after his death. In order to repay the favor, he personally led the ghosts to send his sister to get married.
Becoming a god after death and repaying kindness: After Zhong Kui's death, he was named "General of Exorcizing Evil and Killing Evil" by the Jade Emperor, commanding the ghost soldiers. He was grateful to his fellow villager Du Ping for helping him to take the exam and bury his body, so he decided to repay his kindness by marrying his sister Zhong Li (or Lihua) to Du Ping.
New Year's Eve Marriage: Zhong Kui led the ghosts to send off his sister to get married in a lively manner on New Year's Eve, forming a strange scene of "the ghost king marries his sister", which ultimately led to a happy marriage.
