Synopsis

[Late Tang/Five Dynasties] [Meticulously researched historical novel] [Military strategy and political intrigue] [No System] [No transmigration] In the fifth year of Qianfu under Emperor Xizong of Tang (878), flames of war erupted between the Yellow and Huai Rivers. Huang Chao and Shang Rang once again joined forces, sweeping across the Central Plains, and the age of chaos, with regional military governors carving up the lands east of the Pass, began with a thunderous roar. Under the Zhongwu Army, the Zhao family had guarded Chenzhou for generations, holding up their corner of the world with iron resolve. From Zhao Qiu taking command of the army to repel marauders, to the brothers Zhao Chang and Zhao Xu charging across the battlefield, this family of military officers wrote a tale of loyalty and valor amid the clash of swords and horses in the waning years of the Tang. Yet they could not escape being swept into the whirlpool of power.

The eight great families of the Zhongwu Army were deeply entangled. The Fu and Zhao families shared one another's fortunes, yet war repeatedly brought them together and drove them apart. Qin Zongquan harbored boundless ambition, stirring up turmoil among the military governors. The Han family traveled through Sichuan and Shaanxi, then entered the capital and forced the palace. The Yuan, Yuchi, and other families attached themselves to those in power, seeking a way to survive between the cracks. The Ying and Yin families, sometimes in the open and sometimes in the shadows, stirred up hidden currents amid the labyrinthine intrigues.

Over the forty-six years from the fifth year of Qianfu to the third year of Longde, a youth was tempered into steel amid mountains of corpses and seas of blood, a warlord fell from his peak into the dust, and a beauty shed tears that would be recorded in the annals of history amid upheaval. From the Huang Chao Rebellion to the fall of Later Liang, the eight great families rose and fell with the Zhongwu Army. Amid the struggle for control of the Central Plains, their story lays bare loyalty and betrayal, glory and ruin, becoming the grandest military-governor epic of the late Tang and Five Dynasties period.

Looking for High-Quality Historical Fiction. No Mindless Power Trips or Brain-Dead Plotting

I want high-quality historical fiction that’s engaging and doesn’t dumb things down or rely on brainless plots. It can be satisfying, but don’t treat readers like idiots. No stories like the one where the protagonist fools Cao Cao’s quartermaster about the provisions from the start, or those where a literati protagonist suddenly has the strength of a tyrant. They’re unoriginal and mindless...

Looking for Novels Set During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, the Jin Dynasty, or the Northern and Southern Dynasties

I’ve read so many stories set in the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties that I’m tired of them. I’d like to try some less common historical periods. Preferably completed. Please recommend some~~~

Historical Novels Based on Official History

Historical novels based on official history, not unofficial accounts. Any dynasty is fine, but it absolutely has to be official history! Official history! Please! Historical fiction is really useful to me.

Tang Dynasty Novels Are So Awful, All the Same Stories About Early Tang and Zhenguan

The only book I can think of is "Tang Plotting the World", which is set in Emperor Gaozong’s era. There isn’t another one after that. After all, if the story goes a little further forward in time, Li Bai, Du Fu, Du Mu, Bai Juyi, and Li Shangyin are all born, and it gets harder to show off with poetry. Even this topic of mine has been derailed.
