Never Forget Our National Humiliation or Our Hatred of Japan

“Never forget national humiliation” is an important principle widely promoted in Chinese society. At its heart is remembering the humiliating history endured by the nation and its people in modern times, especially the invasions, oppression, and suffering experienced during such periods as the Opium Wars, the First Sino-Japanese War, and the War of Resistance Against Japan. The principle matters because it: - Reminds future generations to remember the truth of history and cherish the national independence and peace won through the blood of countless martyrs; - Inspires people to learn from history, strengthen national unity, strive for progress, and prevent such tragedies from happening again; - Encourages a rational view of history: to remember past humiliations while rejecting extreme nationalism, and to promote national development and rejuvenation with an open and inclusive attitude. Remembering national humiliation is not about perpetuating hatred. It means taking history as a mirror so we can better safeguard peace and development today and shoulder the responsibility of building the nation.
