Reborn: The Flame of the Martial Way

At 40, Chen Fan suddenly dies after seeing a news report declaring that traditional Chinese martial arts are dead. When he opens his eyes again, he has been reborn in a Beijing hutong in 1978, in the body of a frail young boy. The regret and resentment he felt in his previous life over traditional martial arts become an obsession in this one: he will tear the label "Traditional Chinese Martial Arts Are Dead" to shreds with his own hands!

By chance, he meets Old Master Li, a Xingyiquan grandmaster living quietly among ordinary people. With a vision and determination far ahead of his time, Chen Fan becomes his disciple. From standing in the Three-Body Posture to generating power through the Five Elements Fists, from the turning steps of Baguazhang to Wing Chun's inch power, he brings together the intent of internal martial arts and the strength of external styles.

Amid the tide of reform and opening up, he stands firm in the face of claims that "martial arts are useless" and opens the Torchbearer Martial Arts School in the hutong. As soon as its doors open, challengers arrive one after another: a Japanese judo expert boasts that "throws are unbeatable," an American boxing champion throws punches and taunts him that "Eastern martial arts are all flashy tricks," a Russian Sambo instructor storms the school with a killer's instinct for real combat, and an heir to Brazilian Gracie Jiu-Jitsu declares that "ground grappling crushes everything."

Chen Fan never backs down. He uses Tai Chi's "drawing the opponent in and making them fall into emptiness" to defeat judo, Xingyiquan's "Half-Step Crushing Fist" to counter boxing, Baguazhang's turning and twisting footwork to toy with Sambo, and Wing Chun's inch power along the centerline to break ground-fighting locks. Match after match, he makes the world recognize the real combat power of traditional Chinese martial arts.

He takes disciples and passes on his art, teaching not only techniques but also the ancient principle that "martial virtue comes first." He travels across the country, unearthing styles on the verge of being lost, so that Shaolin's strength, Tai Chi's softness, and Wing Chun's finesse can be passed down in the new era.

Who says traditional Chinese martial arts are dead? Chen Fan spends his life proving that as long as someone stands firm, they will live forever.
