A Good Samaritan at the Foot of the Tianshan Mountains

In Sadiq Village, Baihetiya Town, Bachu County, Xinjiang, lived Pida, a hardworking, kindhearted, and honest Uyghur farmer. One morning, as usual, Pida went to the fields to water his crops, but unexpectedly found an abandoned Han Chinese baby girl. On closer inspection, he was heartbroken to discover that she had an anorectal malformation. With no one willing to adopt her, Pida resolutely decided to take her in and named her Mailikai, meaning "princess."

To cure Mailikai, Pida spent all his savings and fell deeply into debt. He went everywhere borrowing money, and sold most of the family's cattle and sheep, leaving them in dire straits. This angered his younger son, Kanji. Kanji was of marriageable age, but because of Mailikai's illness, his wedding had been repeatedly delayed. His future father-in-law even declared that he would not let his daughter marry unless Mailikai recovered. In desperation, Pida even considered using the money set aside for Kanji's wedding, sparking a fierce conflict between father and son. In the end, Kanji left without saying goodbye.
