A Soul Entrusted to the Compass

At thirteen, Lin Yan lost his soul in an accident. When his grandfather tried to call it back, he accidentally broke the seal beneath the foundation of their old house, awakening the spirit of an artifact bound to a Song Dynasty bronze compass. In truth, it was a remnant of the soul of Lai Wenjun, a Song Dynasty master of geomancy. From then on, their bond as soul and vessel began, and Lin Yan gained “Twin Sight,” allowing him to glimpse the lingering spirits and vengeful fiends wandering the boundary between yin and yang. The compass held the secrets of the “Cosmic Soul-Subduing Art.” Lai Wenjun had remained for a hundred years, unable to fulfill his final wish to protect the dragon veins. Guided by the artifact spirit, Lin Yan learned geomancy. His first encounters with the supernatural included haunted old houses in a small town and a vengeful fiend in a well. Before long, he was drawn into the secrets of Lai Wenjun’s century-old mission to protect the dragon veins, as he fought an organization of soul thieves coveting the compass’s hidden art. When the soul thieves launched their final plan and the boundary teetered on the brink of collapse, Lin Yan merged with the artifact spirit and laid a compass formation at the seven dragon-vein nodes across the country. From the Stele Forest in Xi’an to the Hall of Supreme Harmony in Beijing, from Hangzhou’s West Lake to Guangzhou’s Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, he not only safeguarded the dragon veins and the peace of the human world, but also uncovered the century-old bond between his family and the compass. At last, he achieved a double redemption for himself and the artifact spirit by choosing between “returning the soul to its rightful place” and “living together forever.”
