The Brocade Phoenix: Schemes of the Inner Palace

In a single night, everything collapses, and Yun Wan, daughter of a Jiangnan weaving magnate, is reduced to the lowest-ranking concubine in the imperial palace. Within the vermilion walls, danger lurks at every turn: an embroidery needle can kill, and honeyed words conceal poison. She witnesses an ally die in a pool of blood beneath a white silk noose and hears the heart-wrenching cries of an innocent child who dies young. Staying alive becomes her most extravagant obsession.

She wields peerless embroidery as a blade and her keen mind as a shield. Rising from the dust where anyone could trample her, she climbs over the corpses of conspiracies and betrayal. She saves the son of a disgraced official, fakes a pregnancy to win favor, and maneuvers between Mongol noblewomen and the great families of Jiangnan, turning her enemies’ deadly weapons against them. She exposes the imperial consort’s plot to poison her and devises a plan to quell a rebellion. Every step takes her to the brink of a precipice, and every step brings her closer to the highest throne.

Yet the man on the imperial bed is suspicious and unpredictable. He loves her to the depths of his soul, yet fears her like a tiger. When the truth of her birth tears her disguise apart, she discovers she is a revenge-seeking princess left behind by the previous dynasty! At last, the blade she kept hidden comes free. The betrayal of her personal maid ignites war at the border, and a carefully woven web of poison quietly closes around the emperor. Firelight illuminates her resolute face as she tears up the imperial edict: “It’s time for this realm to have a new ruler.”

She rules from behind the curtain, wielding power over the entire court. Is she a savior, or an even more terrifying usurper? When flames consume the old palace, all that remains is a radiant golden phoenix hairpin engraved with a cryptic saying: “All my life, I was a piece on the board. In the end, I became the one moving the pieces.” And amid the vast grasslands, a white-haired woman turns her Buddhist prayer beads, the corners of her lips lifting.

Blood and rain fall in the depths of the palace, and the phoenix’s cry resounds across the realm. She turns the world into a board and all its people into pieces, playing a game that will end only when one side is destroyed.
