Urban Demon Hunter: Recruited by Bureau 749 from the Start tells the strange story of Ling Ye, an ordinary college graduate.
In this world, the modern city coexists with a hidden “Otherworld.” Demons and ghosts have lived alongside humanity since ancient times, but advances in technology have suppressed or concealed them. Bureau 749, a government agency dealing with the supernatural, is responsible for maintaining the balance.
Ling Ye was living an ordinary life when he unexpectedly awakened the Merit-Slaying Demon System after encountering a low-level vengeful spirit in his rented apartment. The System grants merit points for slaying, purifying, or sealing demons and ghosts, which can be exchanged for cultivation techniques, magical artifacts, and more. Using it, he drove off the spirit with a basic Evil-Breaking Talisman, but this also attracted the attention of a mysterious force.
Afterward, he was recruited by Bureau 749 and joined its Seventh Action Squad. There, he met all kinds of teammates and continued accumulating merit and growing stronger as they dealt with a series of supernatural incidents, including a haunted school, a corpse-driving case in western Hunan, and a dispute over the ruins of the Dragon Palace in the East Sea.
As Ling Ye grows stronger, he must not only confront the clash between modern urban order and demons and ghosts, but also become entangled in the power struggles among various factions amid the spiritual qi revival. Balancing his personal growth through “farming merit” with Bureau 749's collective mission, he uncovers the many secrets of the System and the ancient demon kings, embarking on an urban demon-hunting journey filled with challenges and the unknown.
