"Grudges at the Bottom of the River" is set in the Republic of China and revolves around the grievances of the three generations of the Shen family, the Gu family, and the Su family. Shen Yanqiu, who returned from studying abroad, returned to her old house in Suzhou because of her grandmother's last wish, and unexpectedly uncovered the truth about the death of her mother Shen Minghui (real name Su Wan) - she did not escape with money, but was locked in a woodshed and starved to death by the old lady because she refused to marry the eldest son of the Shen family.
As the investigation deepens, Shen Yanqiu gets to know his half-sister Su Manqing, and learns that the Shen family has set a curse to control Su Wan's bloodline, which also involves the old relationship between his mother and Gu Jingchen: back then, the Shen family robbed Su Wan, tampered with her household registration, and broke up their engagement. Gu Jingchen also died of illness due to persecution. Shen Yanqiu gradually discovered that he was actually Gu Jingchen's son. He and Su Manqing continued to investigate at the Shanghai Medical Clinic, and pieced together the love-hate entanglement of three generations from clues such as marriage letters, hostas, and old letters.
In the end, the curse was broken, and Mrs. Shen's sin, Su Wan's injustice, and Gu Jingchen's deep love were revealed one by one. The grudges of the past disappear with the old things, while the magnolia blooms and the fragrance of cinnamon lingers, witnessing that the belated agreement is finally fulfilled, and new hope quietly grows in time.
