Synopsis

This is a comprehensive collection of historical materials drawn from unofficial Qing Dynasty histories and anecdotes. It is divided into five sections: “Tales from the Qing Palace,” “Qing Dynasty Historical Records,” “Anecdotes of Qing Figures,” “The Arts of the Qing Dynasty,” and “Strange Tales of the Qing Era.” Its contents have been compiled from more than a hundred collections of Qing-era notes and short stories, covering countless secrets from the early Qing to its final years. These include palace intrigues, political insider stories, examination scandals, anecdotes about famous people, literary gossip, tales of the martial world, and strange folk accounts, spanning every aspect of society and highlighting the unusual and entertaining qualities of unofficial histories. The collection encompasses everyone from emperors, empresses, princes, and high-ranking officials to clerks, constables, legal tricksters, doctors, scholars, wandering heroes, fortune-tellers, wealthy merchants, street vendors, and urban rogues. Though it is not an officially compiled history, accounts such as the Empress Dowager’s marriage to a commoner and the struggle among the nine princes for the throne can fill gaps in the official record. Its vivid portrayals of political customs and everyday folkways also make it both a useful historical reference and an entertaining read.

Books That Reflect Real History

I'm looking for books similar to "Understanding the Turbulent Three Kingdoms Through a Single Set of Books (7 Volumes)". I want history books that reflect real history without too much artistic embellishment. Excessive distortions of the facts rob reading of its meaning and distort one's values.
