Deep in the stormy English Channel, Gilliat, a fisherman from Guernsey Island, lives a lonely and taciturn life, but secretly falls in love with the beautiful Delust. A shipwreck caused her family's ship to sink into a dangerous reef. The only hope was to salvage the huge steam engine from the sea. Gilliat resolutely went out to sea alone, facing storm tides and reefs, fighting life and death with underwater monsters, and contending with hunger, cold and despair in the days of isolation and helplessness. His strength comes not only from the will to survive, but also from love and faith. After the mission was completed, he gave up his credit and happiness and chose to disappear quietly between the sea and the sky. Hugo used surging brushstrokes to depict the contest between man and nature, and also carved a noble poem of labor and sacrifice.
