This book tells the story of Guan Changsheng (later renamed Guan Yu, with the courtesy name Yunchang) growing up and transforming in troubled times.
His father Guan Yi was persecuted to death by the powerful Lu Xiong because he stood up for justice and refused to tamper with documents. In order to avenge his father, Guan Changsheng sneaked into Lu Mansion late at night to assassinate Lu Xiong, but he was accidentally involved in a greater crisis. In order to avoid disaster, he took his sick mother and the trapped A Cui away from home. On the way, he met a mysterious Taoist and was given the "Spring and Autumn Taoism". Not only did he learn the exquisite sword skills, but he also realized the true meaning of "the sword can protect good".
On the way to escape, Guan Changsheng encountered injustice and showed his chivalrous style by rescuing a civilian girl who was kidnapped by the powerful in the market of Hejian State; when encountering a great epidemic in Ye County, Wei County, he took risks to obtain life-saving medicines for the people in the epidemic area to protect the glimmer of life; when his bodyguard passed through the Black Wind Pass, facing the bandits, he used his benevolent knife to protect the disaster relief grain truck, and he first realized the profound meaning of "keeping" the road.
On the way, he met Zhang Liao, a fierce general from Bingzhou, on the narrow road of Feihuxing. The two fought side by side to repel the mountain bandits. They formed a deep friendship because of their like-mindedness. They gave each other tokens when they parted, hoping to protect the people together in the future. Finally, Guan Changsheng arrived in Zhuojun, and met Liu Bei, Queen Jing of Zhongshan, and Zhang Fei, the butcher, in front of the Qiao Tower. The three of them formed a sworn brotherhood in Taoyuan due to their common ambition of "reporting to the country and settling down as common people," and started a legendary journey in the name of "righteousness."
In the story, Guan Changsheng has gradually grown from a young man to avenge his father to a lofty idealist who cares about the world and protects the common people. His sword not only cuts through the haze of troubled times, but also protects the justice and hope of the world.
