The fog over Fog Harbor never lifts.
Amid the tidal sounds of the rusted docks, amnesiac investigator Lu Chen awakens in a pool of blood, the mark of a "nonexistent ferry" lingering in his palm. The mechanic girl A Ying, who rescued him, keeps seeing the ghostly figure of a woman in a qipao in her camera lens. Lao Bing, an intelligence broker who snacks on melon seeds in a teahouse, lets slip Cantonese slang concealing the secrets of the "Night Watchers Association." The order of this city is woven entirely from "rule-based curses."
At midnight, the lamplighter rings the bronze bell on Three Lamps Street. Anyone who cannot guess the dead person's identity is dragged into the shadows. The elevator in the glass tower stops automatically on the thirteenth floor, and if it stays there even one second too little, you will encounter "another you." Ancient books in the university library devour the memories of their borrowers, while in the mirrored layer of Fog Harbor Tower, tourists repeat their deaths hundreds of times.
When the Black Bell Tower's chimes pierce the fog, the Night Watchers Association's cleaners have already blocked the alley. Only then does Lu Chen realize that his awakened ability to "see through rules" can not only uncover the nursery rhyme curse looping inside a vending machine, but also tear through the false peace the Association has built on lies.
An Old God opens its eyes during a ritual on Baiyun Mountain. The ghostly souls of Cantonese opera performers from a shadow-puppet troupe dance in the dark alleys, while the song of a deep-sea siren churns the moonlight over a fishing village. Armed with a psychic camera and a rusted compass, Lu Chen's team travels between the supernatural landmarks of the "Eight Sights of Fog Harbor." Their true enemies have never been ghosts and monsters, but a mysterious organization that treats the city's people as pawns, and the fate imprisoned by the rules.
Here, the morning tea steams with ghostly energy, and rules lurk in the shadows beneath the arcades.
