Synopsis

Before I started writing this novel, I never imagined it would turn into either a sweet romance or a tearjerker. I only wanted to know: What would happen if two brilliant women fell in love, one accustomed to arranging her days like calendar appointments, the other to writing them down as essays? And so Qin Zhen and Su Wanqing came to be. One treated “unexpected” as a malfunction, the other as a pleasant surprise. One thought “protecting” someone meant keeping her out of the rain, while the other believed you had to get rained on to smell the earth. They were like parallel lines, colliding against all odds to meet in the snowy streets of Boston, then tearing that intersection into a wound over the course of seven years. The wound scabbed over and became a “tide mark,” a faint, pale scar reminding them that they had loved and hurt, but never completely lost each other. I wrote about their arguments, about them biting each other’s names until they burned in the dead of night, about one nearly shutting out the whole world on a snowy night and the other muting herself in a harbor city. By the end, I realized the most moving words weren’t “I love you,” but “Forget it. Let’s try again.” It turns out love isn’t a plan or a flash of inspiration. It’s just this: The wind picks up, and you happen to be there, so you take shelter together. The wind dies down, and you’re still there, so you walk on together for a while. If you’ve read this far and are still willing to take another detour with them, then let this “tide mark” be the footprints we left in the snow. When the snow melts, the footprints will be gone, but the story will remain.
