The Lacquered Glow of Dexing Hall

The Lacquered Light of Dexing Hall: A Family History Reflected in a Century of Lacquer Art

A blackwood lacquer plaque from Dexing Hall is steeped in the blood, tears, and glory of three generations. In a North China village in the 1980s, the boy Lin Yuye is born carrying the supposed sin of carrying on the family line, while his father’s generation is cast into the abyss by political upheaval. When the spring thunder of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone rings out, his father, Lin Jianming, fights his way to a livelihood amid the ups and downs of business. But Yuye loses his way in the neon jungle: his paintbrush gathers dust, his relationships falter, and he is drawn into a deadly business conspiracy.

Can the faint light of the family’s century-old lacquer craft pierce the fog of an era in upheaval? From the starry basketry of Xiyuan to the copyright battles of Shenzhen, from the humiliation at Zhangbentou to the thunderclap at Bao'an Factory, Yuye struggles onward amid betrayal and redemption. As forged evidence, a radiation crisis, and an art-world miscarriage of justice intertwine, a painting titled "Lacquered Light: Dawn" will finally tear through the darkness, bearing witness to the eternal radiance of an undying craftsman's spirit. This is a family epic of sacrifice, betrayal, and rebirth, a rousing song of life reforged in the crucible of an era's fractures.
