Back to the Famine Years: I Let My Husband Sell Me as a Concubine

During a famine, I became the only thing of value in my family.

To pay for my mother-in-law’s medicine, my husband contracted me out to a wealthy lord to bear him a son.

I naively thought that once I gave birth to a boy, I could reunite with my husband and return to our old life.

But my daughter was strangled, my son was taken away, and my face was ruined.

Dragging my broken body home, I found my husband holding his new bride:

“You’ll be the principal wife, and she’ll be the concubine.”

My mother-in-law said, “You bore another man’s son out there. The Li family can’t be left without an heir!”

At that moment, the sight of my daughter’s bruised little body and the sound of my son’s heart-wrenching cries shattered my heart!

I threw myself against the Li family’s courtyard wall and died.

When I opened my eyes again, it was the night before I was contracted out.

By candlelight, my husband clasped my hand, his voice full of sincerity: “Mother’s life is in your hands!”

“As soon as you have a son, I’ll bring you straight home! I, Li Wenhan, will never betray you!” I only smiled.

“All right.”
