Love for a Second Hometown

Twenty years in Kunshan were enough for a young woman far from home to make a foreign place feel like home.

When she first arrived, her suitcase held little more than a few belongings and vague hopes for the future. The flagstones beneath her feet felt cold, and the soft Wu dialect in her ears sounded both fresh and unfamiliar. She spent countless nights rushing to finish proposals beneath the lights of office towers, repeated tedious tasks on the factory assembly line, and on one winter night, returning late after overtime, was so touched by a street vendor auntie handing her a cup of hot soy milk that her eyes filled with tears.

The city witnessed her transformation from a green young woman into a gentle mother: meeting the person who made her heart race around a corner of the library, planning a future together on the tiny balcony of their rented apartment, and watching their child stumble into her arms for the first time... She rejoiced when she received her first bonus and felt the sting of setbacks at work. She was warmed by a neighbor quietly bringing her a bowl of hot soup, and learned the subtle warmth and chill of human relationships.

Fifteen years passed. New greenways appeared beside Kunshan’s canals, and her home changed from a single room costing a few hundred yuan a month into a cozy place with bright, clean windows. The struggles, love, everyday comforts, and tenderness hidden in those years had long since intertwined with the city’s morning bells and evening drums, becoming the most vivid marks on her life. This place had long ago become her second home, bound to her by blood.
