This is a wuxia novel that turns poems about plum blossoms into martial arts manuals. Set during the Xianfeng era, it depicts a time when the imperial examinations were rife with corruption and cheating was commonplace. The family of Lin Qingquan, a Hanlin scholar, is massacred overnight. His only daughter, Lin Shuying, escapes with bloodstained evidence in hand and is taken in at Plum Valley by Liao Yourong, a master painter of plum blossoms. This fiercely temperamental orphan becomes her disciple, learning martial arts and the qin, and vows to uncover the truth and clear her family's name. Meanwhile, Fang Yunxiu, an official in the Ministry of Justice, is investigating a series of murders linked to cheating in the imperial examinations. His keen insight leads him to realize that the case implicates both the imperial court and the jianghu, with obstacles at every turn.
The mysterious poem "Gazing at Plum Blossoms" runs through the story like a prophecy. Every line conceals a key event and the fate of a character, while also pointing to the lost secret manual, "The Plum Blossom Code." Lin Shuying channels martial arts through the qin. At first, she is consumed by resentment, but under Liao Yourong's guidance, she gradually comes to understand the spirit of "High Mountains and Flowing Water." Fang Yunxiu has solid martial arts skills and excels at criminal investigation and tracking, yet he is constrained by the darkness of officialdom and the study of the literati's psychology left behind by his ancestors. The two go from clashing as enemies after a misunderstanding at the black market to working together in a secret room aboard a pleasure boat, where they come to understand each other. Through trials of life and death, affection blossoms between them, and they become confidants who weather every storm together.
Blending mystery, wuxia, and romance, the story uses a lively, humorous style to examine the literati's "plum blossom complex": the political anxieties and spiritual cages they sought to displace through poems praising plum blossoms. The mastermind, the Blood Prison Lord, exploits these feelings to manipulate people and sow chaos. Lin Shuying's obsession with revenge and her journey toward redemption, along with Fang Yunxiu's unwavering pursuit of the truth and his entanglement with his family's past, unfold layer by layer as they decipher "Gazing at Plum Blossoms."
In the end, the two join their qin and sword to confront the heart of evil at "Thorny Return to the Void" and grasp the true meaning of "The Secret Plum Blossom Manual": it is not meant to control, but to commune with the true heart of Heaven and Earth.
