Four Haystacks, One Home

The four Zhang siblings were born in Zhangjiagou, a poor mountain village. From childhood, they experienced grain requisitions, battles over work points, the one-child policy, fleeing with children in tow, their father falling ill, their mother leaving, a daughter going missing... The eldest, Zhang Lei, entered a teachers' college; the second, Zhang Yang, rebelled against his studies and went south to work after graduating from junior high; the third, Zhang Jun, was clever and studious, excelled in school, and got into university; Zhang Hua went missing as a child. The four ordinary siblings led different lives, filled with the joys and sorrows, the sweetness and bitterness of family bonds... Their story speaks of more than the hardships of searching for a missing loved one. It reveals the radiance of human nature: deep love for family, sincerity toward friends, a love of life, and the generosity, kindness, and diligence rooted deep in this land. In the end, all these beautiful qualities come together as a mighty force, lighting the way home and warming the years, allowing love, after weathering life's storms, to bloom in an even more dazzling splendor.
