The story follows the protagonist Doom Star through the ups and downs of her life, and the three unusual relationships that shape it.
As a girl, she and Valimon missed each other in the wind and snow. As a young woman, she was forced apart from Delir by Earth’s expulsion. During her wanderings through the universe, the Sartanian who had been her lifelong enemy stayed close by her side.
He pursued her, hurt her, and fell in love with her.
At last, when she awoke from the darkness, the first face she saw was that of the enemy entangled with her for years.
Her enemy held her tight, weeping against her face.
Doom Star would never fall in love with her enemy.
And yet, for one moment, her heart truly sank.
A hero driven into exile might, for one moment, genuinely want to lie there in her enemy’s arms,
forgetting hatred and pain.
The best ending for a hero is to die with honor after victory in war.
Or else,
lay down her crown early and disappear into the mountains and snow, which would be better than wandering through space day after day.
Perhaps when no one remembers Doom Star’s name anymore, she will be able to pilot her ship back to the wind and snow that once confined her and raised her.
The star that shone in humanity’s final hour will never go dim. It has only hidden itself now that the world has grown bright.
But if Earth ever falls into darkness again, it will shine as it once did, taking the place of the sun and lighting humanity’s long, desolate night.
