I’m the Martial Arts Champion, and You Want Me to Join Tang Monk’s Journey for the Sutras?

After celebrating his victory as champion of the military tournament, Li Xuan wakes up the next morning to find that he has transmigrated to the glorious Tang Dynasty.

To give himself the best chance of survival, he resolutely enters the imperial military examination. After defeating every opponent, he wins the top spot and becomes the first military champion of the Zhenguan era. He also catches the eye of Princess Gaoyang, whose name is recorded in history, and she wants him as her consort.

Li Xuan thinks, “Her reputation may be a little dubious, but at least she’s a princess.”

Just as Li Xuan is preparing to lie flat, he hears that a Water and Land Dharma Assembly is to be held in Chang’an. Its speaker is a great monk named Xuanzang from Jinshan Temple. A sense of foreboding settles over him.

Sure enough, once the assembly ends, his boss summons him and orders him to protect Master Xuanzang on his journey to the Western Heaven to obtain the scriptures.

Li Xuan is stunned. “I’m a military champion, and you want me to accompany Tang Sanzang on his pilgrimage?”

But he can’t disobey the emperor’s command, so he sets out despite his misgivings.

Fortunately, on the road west, he obtains a Journey to the West Bestiary. Whenever he encounters one of the demons or monsters from the tale, he can randomly gain one of its abilities.

Li Xuan’s imagination immediately runs wild. Come to think of it, isn’t Tang Sanzang also the reincarnation of Jin Chanzi?
