Neon Ashes: The Rise and Fall of Dongguan's Entertainment Empire

Beneath the neon lights of a winter night in Dongguan, the New Dongtai Entertainment Complex squats like a grotesque tumor, devouring desire and money. The “biggest party venue in Asia,” spanning 18,000 square meters, boasts top-of-the-line sound systems, lavish private rooms, and nightly revelry by Southeast Asian tycoons. But beneath the surface lies an abyss of drug deals, sexual enslavement, and cross-border gambling.

Lu Xin, a migrant worker by background, turns the complex into a playground for the exchange of money and power through ruthless tactics and the protection of his mysterious “godfather.” He watches with cold detachment from the surveillance room: sixteen-year-old Xiaofang is injected with a pink drug and forced to trade her body for her younger brother’s school fees; wealthy businessmen throw fortunes onto the gambling tables, while the croupiers are indistinguishable from those in Macau casinos. In the more secretive passageways on the fourth floor, powerful men pick “special services” through one-way glass. A vast network of protection makes every police investigation run into roadblocks.

When college student reporter Chen Mo goes undercover to investigate, he accidentally uncovers the black-money network linking Lu Xin and his “godfather”: from land bribery to arms smuggling, the entertainment complex is only the tip of a vast criminal empire. Meanwhile, undercover police officer Lin Feng edges through the drug den, only to discover that his own handler has long since become part of the protection network.

In the winter of 2009, a raid codenamed “Thunderbolt” tears away the false facade. As armored vehicles surround the complex, Lu Xin is escaping through a secret passage, while Xiaofang sets fire to a gasoline drum hidden in the karaoke bar amid the chaos. In the blaze that shoots into the sky, the den that once took in tens of millions a day is reduced to ashes, leaving behind only the promise of the industrial park’s roaring machinery and the sighs of souls lost to desire.
