The Annals of Chinese History: Turmoil and Transformation from the Yan and Huang Emperors to the Late Qing Dynasty uses the inventive Yellow Emperor calendar as its timeline to weave together thousands of years of history across the land of China.
From the Battle of Banquan between the Yan and Huang tribes to their alliance against Chiyou, the Chinese people began to take shape. The Yellow Emperor ushered in sweeping changes in culture, agriculture, politics, and other fields, laying the foundations of civilization. In the era of Yao, Shun, and Yu, celebrated acts of abdication went hand in hand with great feats of flood control, as the age moved forward through both inheritance and challenge.
The Xia, Shang, and Western Zhou dynasties saw the first rise of states, the gradual formation of political systems, and flourishing arts and culture. In the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, rival lords fought for supremacy while a hundred schools of thought contended, their sparks of wisdom illuminating a chaotic age. The Qin and Han unified the realm, establishing China's basic borders and political order. The Three Kingdoms, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties nurtured unity amid division. The Sui and Tang reached the height of prosperity, displaying the grandeur of a great power. The Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing experienced cycles of prosperity and decline.
In the late Qing, the powerful ships and guns of foreign powers shattered the Celestial Empire's dream of supremacy, bringing the ancient dynasty to its end. With witty, accessible prose, this book brings historical scenes to life and examines the fates of its figures, letting readers easily experience the sweeping grandeur of Chinese history and reflect on its weight through both laughter and contemplation.
Let me make a brief comment. I think the most interesting thing about the book is that it is told in the form of dialogue, and I like to listen to the book while reading, because there will be words that rarely appear in daily life, especially when I am on the treadmill. Every time I think about walking for half an hour, I feel so tired, but while listening and walking, time passes very quickly. These comments may be one-sided, and I may not say them in depth because of that, but I have read Chapter 17 and I think this book is really excellent.
