Rakshasa Eyes

Her right eye cannot see the world of the living, yet it sees all there is to see.

In the twenty-third year of the Republic, Shen Tong’s fortune-telling business takes on a bizarre case:

The owner of an old mansion dies suddenly, a sickly Chinese medicine doctor inexplicably goes mad, and a ghostly figure appears on a developed photograph.

When resentment takes the form of black mist and begins devouring the living, only the white film deep in her right eye can see through the truth:

“That isn’t an illness. It’s a ‘malevolent force’ dwelling in the human heart.”

Four people make a team, each with secrets of their own:

Shen Tong: the “eye” that sees the truth

Lin Mingchang: the “investigator” who seeks the truth

Ruan Xiaoshuang: the “evidence” that preserves the truth

Fang Zigui: the “art” that fights evil forces

Their complementary abilities form a system of “observe, unravel, verify, and treat,” with each person an indispensable link.

Their growth is both personal transformation and the tempering of a team. In the end, they go from “temporary partners, each with their own agenda” to “friends who guard one another’s secrets and would risk their lives for each other.”

“The eye reads the qi of life and death; the blade breaks the balance of yin and yang.”

As you gaze into the abyss, a rakshasa is awakening in your eyes.
