The Heavenly Court has become the “Immortal Affairs Bureau,” Spirit Mountain has turned into a “media company,” the monsters of the mortal world are bizarre, and the underworld is drowning in red tape. Under pressure to meet their KPIs, the Heavenly Court and Spirit Mountain restart the Journey to the West pilgrimage, choosing Tang Sheng as project manager. Guanyin recruits Sun Kongwu, Zhu Bajie, Sha Seng, and the White Dragon Horse to form a team.
Their journey is packed with wildly imaginative “tribulations.” The demons come in varieties such as “office workers” and “entrepreneurs,” and the trials are absurd comedies. Each team member has their own quirks, and their skills lead to one hilarious mishap after another.
As they head west, the team gradually learns to work together, only to uncover all kinds of mysteries behind the pilgrimage. The true scriptures might be a motivational PowerPoint or a pay-to-win app. In the end, through their ridiculous adventures, they find their own “true scriptures,” grow, make peace with one another, and happily take on an absurd world.
