Set in Nanjing from 1936 to 1937, it tells the story of a transnational love crushed by the tide of the times. Guo Jingwei, a son of a wealthy family who graduated from Whampoa Military Academy, met Sakurako Murakami, a Japanese girl who settled in Nanjing with her father at the Lantern Festival. One is a steady and resolute Chinese officer, and the other is a gentle and restrained foreign girl. The two gradually fall in love during a secret meeting by the Xuanwu Lake and under the moonlight by the Qinhuai River, but they are always trapped by nationality barriers and family grudges.
Sakurako's father, Murakami Tsuyasu, was a fanatical war activist. In order to cling to power, he forcibly betrothed his daughter to Japanese military officer Matsui Iwane. When the July 7th Incident broke out in 1937, Guo Jingwei was ordered to guard Marco Polo Bridge. Before leaving, he made a promise with Yingzi to return. However, the smoke of the battlefield blocked his return journey, and he finally died heroically in the bloody battle. After the Japanese army captured Nanjing, Yingzi, who learned of the death, pretended to agree to the marriage and wanted to assassinate Matsui for revenge. After the failure, she entrusted her younger brother to witness the truth. She sank into the Qinhuai River and put her life to the end of this tragic love affair.
