In some stories, Lin Mo is born into humble circumstances, an ordinary boy from Qingniu Village who lives on the villagers' charity after both his parents die. While hunting one day, he happens to find the Mysterious Mechanism Ring in a crack in a tree trunk. Its owner, Xuanjizi, sees his natural aptitude and character, takes him as a disciple, and sets him on the path of cultivation. By day, Lin Mo chops wood and does odd jobs to make ends meet. At night, he enters the ring to train under Xuanjizi, successfully drawing qi into his body and reaching the late stage of Qi Refining in just three years. One day in the mountains, he finds two men in black attacking a woman in white. He steps in to help out of a sense of justice, despite the vast difference in their abilities.
