A Pillow in Chang'an, Prophecy of Tomorrow

In the early Zhenguan era, in a slum in Chang'an's Western Market, a boy named Li Ye scrapes by doing odd jobs. His “time lag” ability often makes people think he's dim-witted: he can somehow know the next day's weather and where merchants will be, and even avoid being harassed by thugs, but he doesn't dare tell anyone.

On the surface, Li Ye is a suddenly rising wealthy merchant in Chang'an. In reality, he is a descendant of the Northern Zhou imperial family. His clan went into hiding to escape the wars at the end of the Sui Dynasty, then was wiped out by an enemy family. He is the only survivor, and his jade pendant conceals clues to the previous dynasty's treasure.

When his enemies learn that Li Ye is alive, they try to seize the treasure and silence him. During a “preview day,” Li Ye sees that a coup will break out in Chang'an, and his enemies will take advantage of the chaos to steal the treasure, even putting innocent civilians in danger.

He realizes that his “time lag” isn't just for his own carefree life; it's also meant to protect the people he wants to keep safe. On the day of the coup, Li Ye uses his memories of the “preview day” to lead Tang forces into an ambush against his enemies, foiling their plot. In recognition of his service, Li Shimin pardons him despite his ties to the previous dynasty and places the treasure in the imperial treasury.

Li Ye keeps part of his fortune and entrusts his main businesses to trusted subordinates. He builds a manor outside Chang'an and fulfills his ultimate dream: “Sleep until I wake naturally, and count money until my hands cramp.”
