Everyone in Beijing's elite circles says Shen Jingxu lives for Jiang Hua.
In kindergarten, he shielded her from a pencil's point. As a teenager, he climbed trees to stick cicadas there after they disturbed her nap.
When they were grown, all it took was her saying, "Spring is so lovely," for him to buy properties in more than a dozen springtime cities around the world, just so he could take her on a springtime date whenever she wished.
Apart from the time he lost his memory, Shen Jingxu gave her almost all the sincerity he had to offer in a lifetime.
Even after they married and Jiang Hua was diagnosed with ALS, when everyone in the city urged him to divorce her, he said nothing. He simply carried her, now unable to feel her limbs, and climbed the mountain steps to every temple carved with inscriptions, bowing at each one. He took her hand and guided it again and again over the character "life" carved into the stone, hoping she could keep living.
Yet this very man spent the bitter winter night she was pronounced dead, sitting motionless with her in his arms. At last, he pressed his forehead to her cheek and murmured softly:
"Huahua, I've fulfilled every responsibility I had to you in this life. If there's another life, I hope you'll let her and me be together."
