After pushing himself to the point of death, workaholic Chen Shi opened his eyes and found himself back in the twelfth lunar month of 1976. He had planned to tough it out for a year or two, then dive into business and ride the wave of the times to the top. Instead, he discovered that his own father had taken everything of value from the family and run off with a young female sent-down youth.

In the freezing cold, with no food or money, Chen Shi and his widowed mother were thrown out of their home with nowhere to go.
Fortunately, he remembered that the government would reinstate the college entrance exams the following year. As a workaholic, he would return to his old ways and study himself into the ground.
With a promise made, Chen Shi set out to ride the tide of the times, carrying thirty-two eggs and sixty-seven cents that the entire village had saved by scrimping, along with twenty jin of nationwide grain coupons. He would compete alongside the first generation of 5.7 million exam takers.
