[A cold-faced technician + a resilient factory worker]
Synopsis of A Glimmer in the Cold Night
In the late 1970s, beneath the roaring spindles of the Northern Red Flag Textile Mill, fate’s gears brought together Gu Zheng, a technician as cold as ice, and Shen Wei, a tough, long-suffering loom operator. A deliberate act of humiliation in the factory canteen plunged Shen Wei into a sea of rumors and tore open the sealed-off past they shared as sent-down youths. That mosquito-ridden summer night, the awkwardly offered medicated balm and silent protection by the kerosene lamp had already set in motion a tangled bond that would span a decade.
When Shen Wei shattered the black umbrella that symbolized protection on a rainy night and resolutely applied to night school in search of a fresh start, a treacherous bolt trapped her in an abandoned warehouse. Gu Zheng’s desperate charge through the iron door, his flesh and blood breaking it open, and the wound bleeding through the back of his hand exposed the molten fire beneath his frozen exterior. Yet after saving her, one cold rebuff, “I don’t need you meddling”, pushed them into even deeper confusion.
This is a story about dignity and redemption. Under the scrutiny of the collective and the constraints of the times, she wields knowledge to cut a path through the thorns, while he glimpses his true feelings in the cracks of his own restraint. Through the long winter night, two battered souls will at last become the faint light illuminating each other’s abyss in a city woven from steel and cotton, and together set out on a journey of rebirth.
