Lin Chen stood in the lavish hotel lobby, clutching a yellowed marriage contract so tightly that his knuckles turned white. The whispers around him pierced his ears like needles:
“Is this the country bumpkin the Su family brought in?”
“I heard the old master of the Su family owed his family a favor, so he arranged this ridiculous marriage.”
“Miss Su is the jewel of our city. How could she possibly marry him?”
Lin Chen looked up at the woman on the stairs, dressed in a designer gown and breathtakingly beautiful: Su Muxue. She was his fiancée in name, and someone everyone else considered far beyond their reach.
Su Muxue came down the stairs, her voice cool. “Lin Chen, we need to talk.”
On the terrace, Su Muxue handed him a check. “There's a million here. Take it and leave. Never show your face again. This engagement should never have existed.”
Lin Chen glanced at the check, then at the haughty woman before him, and suddenly laughed. “Do you really think I'm short on money, Miss Su?”
“Isn't that so?” Su Muxue frowned. “You've been living in the countryside all this time. Have you ever even seen this much money?”
Just then, a commotion broke out outside the hotel. Several luxury cars bearing special license plates pulled up at the entrance. An imposing old man in a Chinese tunic strode inside, followed by a group of people who treated him with the utmost respect.
The old man walked straight up to Lin Chen and bowed respectfully. “Young Master, you've finally agreed to show yourself! Everyone in the family is waiting for you to come back and take charge!”
The entire room erupted in shock.
Su Muxue froze, and the check slipped from her hand to the floor.
The old man glanced at Su Muxue, then turned back to Lin Chen
