Set in the Republican era, the story follows Shen Yuehan, a twenty-first-century surgeon. After completing an operation, she is making her rounds when a man rushes at her and stabs her, causing her to transmigrate to one of the darkest moments in Republican-era China. There, she meets He Yong'an, a resistance fighter, and helps him and his comrades. As they spend time together, they fall in love. She later joins the Communist Party through her connections and becomes an underground operative in Shanghai. During this time, He Yong'an dies in battle. Shen Yuehan is heartbroken when she receives the news, but it only strengthens her resolve to drive out the invaders. Working under a false identity, she provides intelligence to her side and helps expel the invaders. After witnessing the founding of the People's Republic of China, she lives out her final years in that world and dies of old age. Then she wakes up in a hospital in the twenty-first century. After being discharged and returning home, she thinks back on everything she experienced and feels as if she has lived an entire lifetime. She goes on to dedicate herself to medicine and becomes a world-renowned master surgeon.
