“Ding! Host, you can spend points to level up.”
!
“Hahaha! The three-year agreement is up. Nalan Yan...”
“Beep.”
The tricycle blared, cutting off Xie Xu before he could finish. Better quit while he was ahead; any more and he'd be breaking the rules.
After transmigrating to this world of immortal cultivation, Xie Xu awakened a Level-Up System. Perhaps the System was afraid he'd get lonely: his beat-up tricycle and the big black dog he raised both came as bonus companions.
While others flew on swords to slay divine servants, he rode his tricycle around the markets. While others cultivated bitterly for a hundred years in pursuit of the Great Dao, he leveled up by spending points through the System.
He never wanted to stir up trouble. He just wanted to stick with his tricycle and dog, run a little street stall, and live until the end of time.
But before he could even get the stall set up, trouble came knocking. Every time he crushed one obstacle, another wave came along...
“I only wanted to run a little stall and coast my way to immortality... You forced me to slay gods.”
On one side was the carefree dream of riding his tricycle across mountains and rivers. On the other was the ruthless resolve of a blade rising and falling.
Xie Xu ran his fingers over the cold hilt of his bone-cutting saber. The last trace of laziness faded from his eyes. If this cultivation world wouldn't let him live in peace, then he'd carve out a place where he could, treading over mountains of corpses and seas of blood.
Many years later, Xie Xu stood with his hands in his pockets high above the heavens. In one glance, he took in the splendor of all the worlds; looking down, he saw the smallness of every living thing. For no reason at all, he sighed.
“What do you think the view from immortality is like?”
“(Silence.)”
“Answer me!”
“What else? It's glorious as a flower.”
“Glorious as a flower...”
“I turn around and the green hills are still there; my heart is unchanged. So why do I feel so alone...”
