The Little Sun on the White Coat

[From School Uniforms to Wedding Gowns + Doctors Through It All + Healing Each Other]

[Warmhearted Pediatrician × Cold, Stern Cardiothoracic Surgeon]

In Wen He’s textbooks, she hides doodles of little suns she drew throughout high school. The stern-faced desk mate Li Ye, who once picked up her textbook, has the same design tucked into his notebook of mistakes.

When she cries in the medical school dissection room, he hands her a hand warmer printed with a little sun. When he stays up all night conducting experiments, her encouraging notes cover his lab.

From white coats to surgical scrubs, he uses reason to shield her when the family of a young patient gives her a hard time. When he hits rock bottom after a failed surgery, she embroiders a little sun on his uniform.

When sunflowers cover the balcony of their new home, he proposes with an album made from all her little sun doodles. “From school uniforms to wedding gowns, my operating lights will always shine for your little sun.”

Their journey together through youth and the medical profession holds the gentlest answer of all: your dreams have had my name written in them all along.
