The Spark Will Break the Dawn Someday

Whenever dusk spreads over the old walls of Qinyuan Residential Community, Yang Zhining sits beneath the pagoda tree, running his fingers over his carbon-fiber cane. The copper lotus at its tip has been polished bright by the years, and a few grains of sand from Storm Lake remain embedded between its petals. Thirty-five years have passed, yet those days steeped in blood and tears still burn deep in his memory: the torn-up Chinese textbook, the copper crutch sunk to the bottom of the lake, the mottled carvings on the air-raid shelter walls, and the fierce resolve in his father's stride as he clutched a brick and headed for Song Gao's house.

This is no fairy tale about “making a comeback.” When fate pushes you into the mud, what saves you isn't pity, but the strength to claw your way out through blood and tears. As his father once said: “You don't wait for the light to come. You boil away your blood and find it for yourself.”
