The first rays of morning sunlight pierced the clouds and spilled over the entrance to Qingyun Sect. Mist curled through the mountains, making the place look like an immortal realm. A group of gray-clad servant disciples had already begun their day's work. Some carried water, others chopped wood or swept the stone steps, all moving with practiced speed.
Among them, a tall, slender youth leisurely swept up fallen leaves. He seemed lazy, yet every sweep sent the leaves neatly into the dustpan without missing a single one. The youth had delicate features and a calm air about him, as if nothing in the world concerned him.
“Lin Xuan! Slacking off again!” a gruff voice called from behind.
Without turning around, Lin Xuan continued sweeping at an unhurried pace. “Senior Brother Wang, I'm working, aren't I?”
Senior Brother Wang strode over and snatched the broom from Lin Xuan's hands. “Look how much work everyone else has done! You're the slowest of them all!”
Lin Xuan shrugged and gave him an innocent smile. “I'm just trying to do a perfect job and sweep it clean.”
“Enough talk! The spirit fields on the back mountain need watering today. Go do it!” Senior Brother Wang ordered, glaring at him.
“Yes, yes, I'm going right now.” Lin Xuan took the bucket and slowly headed for the back mountain.
On the way, several inner sect disciples approached. When they saw Lin Xuan, they all looked at him with disdain.
“It's that useless servant again.”
