As a young woman, Ye Shu fell in love with Gu Chengye at first sight while living abroad.
He invited her to dinner at a café, took her for walks along streets carpeted with golden plane-tree leaves, and bought her an entire bouquet of red roses.
She thought Gu Chengye liked her too, until she accidentally heard that she bore some resemblance to the woman he had always longed for.
It turned out that, to him, she was nothing more than a substitute to make up for his unrequited love.
Ye Shu promptly returned to China, and from then on, there was no word from her.

When they met again, Ye Shu chose to act as if she hadn't seen him.
But the man, usually so proud, refined, and taciturn, seemed like a different person, shamelessly pursuing her.
He used work as an excuse to get close to her, showed up drunk and refused to leave her doorstep, and pretended to be pitiful when he was sick so she'd take care of him. He stopped at nothing.
Fed up with him, Ye Shu told him outright that back then, she'd only been attracted to his looks, hoping to put an end to his delusions.
But Gu Chengye saw that as a glimmer of hope.
“People rarely change their taste. If she was attracted to my looks once, she can be attracted to them a second time.”
